WebSep 9, 2024 · In March of 1968, the first power from two 15.7-megawatt units at Chugach's modern, new gas-fired power plant at Beluga flowed into Anchorage. 1969 A third 18.5-megawatt unit is added to the International plant in 1969 in anticipation of the region's growing energy demands. Webof California (Chevron) discovered the Beluga River Gas Field while drilling a deep oil exploration prospect in 1962. In 1968, Chugach Electric Association constructed a power plant at Beluga and became the first consumer of gas from the field. The Beluga River Power Plant is now the largest generator of power for consumer use in Alaska.
