The device will pick up if a patient has abnormal cells requiring an endoscopy, and it has been proven to be 10 times more effective than the detection methods in usual care. Conclusion The trial team concluded that using the Cytosponge test led to significantly more people being diagnosed with Barrett’s oesophagus compared with standard care. In some cases, a positive Cytosponge test also led to a diagnosis of earlier stage oesophageal cancer.
