It was June 3, 1948, and sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski got to work. He had been asked by Henry Standing Bear, an Oglala Lakota chief, to build a memorial to honor all Native Americans. WebHe studied Zeitner and the writings of other scholars and rock hounds and compared them with his own experience in the field. By 1998, he’d accumulated enough knowledge to present his own Fairburn agate origin story in a book called South Dakota’s Fairburn Agate, which includes diagrams and beautiful agate photography by his wife, Mary Jane.
